AYFIELD—What a difference a year makes.

Last season, Mayfield traveled to North and swept the Rangers in three games decided by three points or less.

On Tuesday, the Rangers flipped the script a bit and beat the host Wildcats in four sets, 26-24, 25-17, 25-15, 25-15, in the Western Reserve Conference opener for both squads.

“That was very important, especially because we lost to Mayfield last year,” said North coach Chelsey Regovich. “Starting 1-0 (in conference) really helps going into Madison on Thursday. Our goal is to be No. 1 in the conference, so we have to take them one at a time. We came here prepared for this game and second up is Madison so we have to focus and keep pushing.”

The Rangers built a 13-8 lead in the first set but the Wildcats reeled off 10 straight points to take an 18-13 lead.

North didn’t flinch.

The Rangers used their three-pronged attack to battle back for the first set win and set the tone for the rest of the match.

Senior Sam Pirosko, junior Lindsey Mausser and senior Maria Blatnik combined for 32 of the Rangers’ 42 kills in the match.

Pirosko led the Rangers with 12 while Mausser finished with 11 and Blatnik hammed home nine. Sophomore Julia Kerns added five kills for North.

“Maria and Sam are great hitters,” Mausser said. “It’s great knowing that we have options to spread the ball around.”

North had little trouble in the second set then fell behind early and never recovered in the third.

“They started getting quiet on the other side and once they get quiet we get quiet,” Regovich said. “That’s when the other team can come back and get us. We just need to focus on finishing a lot sooner than the fourth set.”

The Rangers scored the first five points in the fourth set and led by as many as 11 before settling the match in the fourth set.

“It was a huge conference win for us,” Mausser said. “Mayfield is a very talented team and has always given us good competition on the court.”
