Fourth-seeded North continued its postseason dominance on Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of No. 5 Madison in a Division I sectional final at Euclid High School.
The Rangers, who have won six straight sets in the playoffs, advanced to Tuesday’s district semifinals where they’ll play top-seeded Mentor.
“I’m glad we are getting another opportunity to play Mentor in the semifinals,” said North coach Chelsey Regovich.
Mentor, ranked 16th in the state, ended North’s season last year with a 3-0 win in the district semifinals and also beat the Rangers in a 2014 sectional final, 3-0.
North hopes to carry over the momentum it gained from beating both Shaw and Madison in straight sets.
The Rangers opened the sectional championship game with a 25-17 win then held off the Blue Streaks in the final two sets, 25-23 and 27-25.
“It was exciting watching the team work together and put up a fight to get the win in three sets,” Regovich said.
Maria Blatnik recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 14 assists and also pitched in with seven digs.
“I am very pleased with my performance,” Blatnik said. “It’s always exciting to be in double digits when it comes to kills. We played well as a team last night and that’s all I can ask for.”
Samantha Pirosko pitched in with 19 digs and 10 kills and was 13-of-14 from the service line. Lindsey Mausser added 10 kills and four blocks and Taylor Valaitis led the team with 30 assists.
North will play Mentor at Euclid on Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
