CHARDON—Mikely Duleba scored 14 points and Brian Skolny added 12 but it wasn’t enough as North fell to host Chardon on Friday, 69-54.

The Rangers fell behind early and never recovered.

“We can talk about executing the game plan or not, but we played tonight with little emotion,” North coach Rob Koelling said. “They had more emotion and more intensity tonight than we did and it showed on the scoreboard.”

North set out to limit Chardon standout Ben Sulka’s scoring opportunities.

Sulka finished with a few points below his season scoring average but the Rangers weren’t able to counter on the other end.

“We wanted to come out and be aggressive defensively to try to limit Ben Sulka’s points,” Koelling said. “We held him to three points under his total but they took it to the basket stronger and we were more passive in our offensive sets.”

Trailing by 11 at halftime, the Rangers came out of the break with a pair of steals and baskets but the Hilltoppers recovered and went on to close out the win.

“We came out and tried to mix up our press and got two quick steals and scores right away,” Koelling said. “We started with the intensity that we needed to have out there but again our offense broke down all night. It was one pass and we were doing a lot of standing around and watching. We weren’t looking to be playmakers on offense. Defensively, give them credit, they knocked down some shots in that press but if we piece together three or four more possessions like that and you go on a run of eight to 10 points that would be a huge momentum swing and it brings your team a lot of energy. We just can’t break down that easy and that’s what it came down to.”

Aaron Broja added eight points for the Rangers and Cameron Proctor finished with seven.

The Rangers return to action at University School on Dec. 28.
