Girls Varsity Basketball · North clinches share of second straight WRC Title

North Girls Basketball

North used a balanced offensive attack to beat visiting Riverside on Saturday, 75-24.

With the win, the Rangers clinched at least a share of a second straight Western Reserve Conference title.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling,” North coach Paul Force said. “For us to graduate seven kids and the all-time leading scorer in our school’s history and then come back with the target on our backs and get it done again is pretty impressive. It’s a credit to how these girls have bought into what we do. Their preparation and focus levels have been higher than any team I’ve been around. I’m very proud of them, but the time to look back on all of this isn’t now. We have a quick turnaround to some big games next week. We are onto Brush; right now that’s the only game on our schedule that matters.”

Destiny Leo led the Rangers with a game-high 22 points and senior Taylor Valaitis contributed 16 points to the win.

Valaitis also led the Rangers with nine rebounds.

“It’s a great feeling to go back-to-back as conference champs,” Valaitis said. “All of our hard work and preparation is paying off. We are humble and excited, but we have a lot more work to do.”

Abby Carter added 14 points and led the team with six steals and six assists. Avril Drew finished with 11 points and senior Maddy Hamilton finished with three points.

“It means a lot to me to close out this year with a second straight conference championship, but we still have some work to do and I’m excited to see where our team goes,” Hamilton said.
